Students from Harrison High School AVID 12 joined students from Sierra High School as ENT Credit Union and the Denver Broncos presented a seminar on Financial Literacy focusing on managing money, budgeting, and credit scores. Students were then put through a real life simulation game whose outcome was determined by the choices they made about buying cars, spending money on entertainment, or starting a family.
Retired Denver Bronco Cornerback Le-Lo Lang states, “The financial literacy event gives the kids the opportunity for real life experiences. Learning about different things such as managing your money and budgeting gets them prepared for the life after high school”. Lang was a 5th round draft pick who played four years with the Broncos and one year with the Seattle Seahawks. Lang was also accompanied by Denver Broncos Cheerleaders Katie and Taylor.
Harrison High School Principal Peter Vargas was also in attendance, and was grateful for the students to participate in this event. “I wish I got all of this information when I was 17-18 years old,” he states. “I am thrilled for the students as they learn and intake the information of financial literacy. This is a opportunity for our students to prepare as they go into the real world,” Vargas states.
AVID 12 Teacher and Chaperone Katy Goodson expresses her gratitude towards this impactful event, as it helped her students learn and gain new knowledge on financial literacy. “I believe financial literacy is a skill kids don’t have access to in school,” she states. “Your financial decisions shape your future, and I want my AVID students to learn the importance of saving, budgeting, and credit,” Goodson says.
